Joseph Whitworth born at Stockport, England, 1803 was to become foremost manufacturer of machine tools of his time. Approached in 1854 by Lord Hardinge to investigate 'mechanical principles applicable in the construction of an efficient weapon,’ his experiments revolutionised rifle design.
